Why Blog?

As ordinary citizens, we often feel helpless as we behold the savage atrocities happening around us. We know that ISIS exists and we know that they are killing thousands around the globe. However, we also know that we are unable to physically fight them off. But what if there IS something we can do to counteract their efforts? Through blogging about the issue of ISIS recruitment, we wish that one more person become informed and understand the omnipresent threat against ordinary citizens. We wish that through this blog one less person will give his heart to ISIS. For our Humanity in Globalization (POLI 3078) project, a research paper or report would’ve certainly been the easy way out. However, we wanted to take a proactive direction towards this project and disseminate this information on the web. A research paper submitted to the professor carries one purpose - the completion of a graded assignment. However, in exhibiting our research and the obtained knowledge through a blog, we wanted to carry the purpose of raising awareness and counteracting ISIS through a social media, soft power approach. As ISIS is known to a prominent social media influencer - at the individual level - all efforts should be directed towards overpowering ISIS influence on the web. Through Flowers against Guns, we are taking the first step in such a strategy as students of HKU.

"They might have guns, but we have flowers." ISIS has become the deadliest killing machine across the globe today - this everexpanding terrorist “state” is killing faster than with what the statistics can keep up. Evident by the terrorist attacks carried out internationally, ISIS is no longer a Middle Eastern problem. It is a global issue that is targeting ordinary citizens, people just like you and me. ISIS’s growth strategy is a two-pronged one - not only does the organization target ordinary civilians through their indiscriminate terrorist attacks, it also targets lonely, vision-less individuals around the world and eventually lure them into recruitment. Through this blog, we want to emphasize that ISIS isn’t JUST a killing machine - it is a strategic and sophisticated social media powerhouse that exploits its social media skills- especially on Twitter- to seduce ordinary citizens of both sexes to join ISIS. The current media tends to focus on the military aspect of ISIS; Therefore, this blog aims to raise awareness about the sheer danger of ISIS recruitment, often veiled by the bloody, sensationalist nature of ISIS activity.

In this blog, we first provide background information on ISIS as an organization and the organization’s scope and influence on Social Media. This blog contains a sundry of relevant and up-to-date news regarding ISIS recruitment, ISIS’s social media activity, and the recent counterattack strategy by a hackers group called Anonymous. We also provide an in-depth summary of case studies dealing with different individuals from the US, the UK, and South Korea who were all subjected to the enticement of ISIS recruitment.
